US Presidents Announcement!

This Sunday marks the end of our 2 week birthday celebration and we have one more announcement! A couple days ago we announced that we were bringing Geography to AR Flashcards starting with the US States. Today we would like to announce that we are bringing US History to life with US Presidents! This flash card pack is going to be a departure for us as we are not using 3d models to bring the presidents to life but interactive animations. Each card will be a president’s painting and when you bring the app over the painting it will come to life! We are in very early development on this pack and we think it’s going to be a fun way for US kids to learn their presidents. The further we get into development the more info we’ll share on how this is going to work but we have some great ideas that we can’t wait to...

States – Geography Announcement!

We have another announcement that we think is going to be exciting!  Not only are we working on Colors & Shapes, Basic Math and User Created Flash Cards BUT we are also working on Geography!!  We are working on States and this is probably our most ambitious project that we are working on!  With 50 models and cards to create this is going to be a great undertaking and we are in the planning stages right now!  It’s the project we will be putting our fullest attention on after we wrap on Colors & Shapes and Basic Math.  We just wanted to give you guys a small glimpse and we want to be transparent when it comes to our road map for future content! With The States we know that we want to teach kids the States names and the capital city for each state.  We would also like to include state flags and facts pertaining to each state.  We hope to include major rivers, important monuments and more on each model.  We want to hear what you would like to see in this project as we value your input! Our plans are to finish Colors & Shapes and Basic Math by Summer and hopefully States by the end of 2014!  Even with these awesome announcements we still aren’t done!  Stay tuned later in the week for one more announcement of yet another subject that we hope to bring AR Flashcards this year! What do you think of our mascot Augmonkey in his explorer...

Basic Math Announcement!

As everyone knows we have Colors and Shapes next up in the pipeline for AR Flashcards but also in development is Basic Math!! This is our number one requested subject and we have some cool ideas for the this that we are excited about. Jesiey, our 3d artist, has come up with a great look for our numbers using our favorite theme, animals! We are working on addition, subtraction, division and multiplication! At this time we are working on 0-10 equations (1+1, 1+2, 1+3, etc.) for the Kindergarten level but we welcome suggestions on what you would like to see! This will be part of our huge aggressive initiative this year to expand AR Flashcards into numerous subjects that can make learning fun for young children! Our goal is to have seven new subjects (we count math as four) done by summer which means we still have some announcements to come… So, let’s review, we have a create your own flash card mode, colors and shapes and now basic math that will be coming in 2014! Let us know what you think of our concept images and what you as a parent or teacher would like to see in the...

User Created Flash Cards Announcement!

One of the things we are very excited about that we are adding to AR Flashcards 3.0 is User Created Flash Cards! This means you can take one of our animals and use them to augment your own flash card! The biggest use we see for this is having your child draw their own artwork for them to augment! They will have a blast drawing a picture of a penguin and then having our penguin pop up over their artwork! This is just one of MANY things being added to our upcoming release of AR Flashcards 3.0 that we hope to have ready by June ’14. More announcements will be made in the coming weeks and months! Stay tuned! Click for Demo...

Developer Diary Entry #2 Vuforia

Developer Diary Entry #2 Vuforia

Since we are indie developers with no money we wanted to go from concept to product as quickly as possible. The best way for us to do this was to use a third party solution for augmented reality. Since AR Flashcards version 2.0 we have been using Qualcomm’s Vuforia SDK. SDK stands for software development kit. We use the Unity 3D extension for our project. Unity is the development environment that we use to create AR Flashcards. The easy implementation of Vuforia allows us to spend our money and time on things like creating 3d content and graphic design. The Vuforia SDK has several different elements that can be used but we currently only use the Image Target solution. This allows us to choose any image we want to be our marker that triggers the AR. In our case we use our beautifully designed flash cards that our graphic designer Denny has created as our image markers. The process is simple yet complicated. The hard part is creating markers to use that have a lot of contrast and subtle differences in them so that Vuforia can differentiate between all the different markers when you are trying to load your different 3d models. There is a lot of trial and error involved when we test this. The easy part is integrating the images with Vuforia. Once you are a registered developer on their website their is a section called Target Manager. This is where you go to upload your image markers for use with the SDK. The cool thing is once you upload your images (in our case it’s our flash cards) Vuforia gives you a star rating for how well they think your image marker will track. 5 stars are the best and is what we shoot for. The better the rating the better you content will track on the marker. Once you upload your markers Vuforia creates a downloadable package to use in your project. I forgot to mention that Vuforia is free!! Other 3rd party AR solutions cost a lot of money to license which is hard to justify when you don’t make any money! Qualcomm does a fantastic job updating their SDK with bug fixes and fantastic new features. They offer a ton of solutions that we hope to utilize more of in the future. Examples of this are cloud recognition, text recognition, virtual buttons, user defined targets and more! They have a lot of great tutorials on their developer site and I encourage any developer that’s interested in AR to check it out. You can have one of their sample projects up and running on a device in minutes. For our 3.0 launch of AR Flashcards we are going to be digging deeper and using more of what they offer!! I’ll update you on what those are as we progress! Thanks for reading! Follow me...
